One night during the Jihad Jitters, Burroughs was walking home. Three Arab men followed the American. One of them pulled out a dagger that was one foot long. Burroughs spun around and yanked out his six-inch switchblade. He lowered his torso into ‘a classic Commando Tactic Knife Fighter’s Crouch,’ holding his left hand out to parry.

Burroughs scared the Arabs silly. The trio fled. Burroughs did not yell or say anything. Soon the three return laughing to Burroughs and beg him for money.

As turbulent as the Jihad Jitters were, William Burroughs wrote Allen Ginsberg that Tangier was as safe as any town he had ever lived in. Tangier was even incomparably safer than Mexico City. Burroughs wrote in capital letters:

ARABS ARE NOT VIOLENT.
